For me, there are few things sweeter than picking berries with my son. It's a nature-provided scavenger hunt, the perfect activity we can always agree on. Once we’re through, we’ll have a “berry picnic”, which is exactly what it sounds like - a blanket, a summer day, and a bowl full of berries.
I have been making these berry bowls for a few years now. They are a true technical challenge, and they began simply because I wanted to see if I could pull it off. Over the years I’ve kept a couple for myself, and I’ve frankly been shocked by what a staple they are in my kitchen. When the big stainless steel colander is put away, the Berry bowl is always right there ready to fill.
Also, did you know how many berries toddlers will eat? It’s insane.
I only make these in the summer, mostly because they are time consuming and tricky to make. I mean, my god - the things that can go wrong in the pottery process boggles the mind. But when things go right, they are so wonderfully worth it. They are a true joy to use (and surprisingly durable).
So, how are these made?
- These each begin as wheel thrown forms - not too thick, or it will be too difficult to punch out the holes; not too thin, or the piece won’t be strong. The panel of illustration on the top adds a bit more strength, a comfortable place to hold, and a lot of visual interest as that is where my illustration can go.
- Next, they are trimmed - again, not too thick or thin - it’s a Goldilocks situation.
- The holes are painstakingly gridded out and pierced one by one. This can take hours!!
- The handles are sculpted and added. Again, can take hours.
- The illustration is carved, and signature stamp is added. Whew.
- Try really really really hard not to break it while it dries. This is the hardest part, as the consistency is like chalk.
- Add a black wash and inlay. Clean up the holes individually with a wet paint brush and sponge. Again, try so hard not to break it.
- Bisque fire!!
- Paint, glaze. It’s a lot stronger now that it’s been fired. Breathe and have some fun during this part. See how the sunset shines through the holes.
- Glaze fire! Pray!
- Unload, sand, wash.
- Fill with berries (any variety)
- Berry picnic.
- Use daily.
- Use forever.
